Doubled face counts[edit source]

I wanted to have a quick conversation about the doubled face counts. This is directed towards Galoomba, but anyone that sees this is welcome to contribute. I see that you were removing some of the face count categories from pages that had two. (And thanks for fixing Square cupolaic blend where I made an arithmetic error.) I had been adding these smaller counts intentionally, so there are a bunch more. I think you already know this, but I was adding a smaller count treating all compound faces as 1 face, and a larger count treating all compound faces as their individual components. I think we should try to be as consistent as possible, so if we agree that there should be a single official face count, then I'd like to go through and remove all the extra counts. My initial thinking was that, while it's philosophically nice to have a single method of counting faces for the categories and treat the other as incorrect, both counts seem useful for finding polyhedra. The big counts are nice because they are pretty much the way most people would count faces. But the having the second counts is nice because they behave nicely with stellations. If a polyhedron is in the n faces category then all its stellations (that have pages) would also be in the n faces category. I'm also definitely biased towards doing nothing, since going through every page again to remove double categories would be a bit of a pain.

I want to get an informal agreement on this, so I can add a brief bit of text to the main category for future editors and make sure all the pages are consistent. Cheers. Sycamore916 (talk) 13:53, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

I agree with all your points. I've asked other people in the discord, but haven't gotten a reply yet. --Galoomba (talk) 06:35, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
